We have so many people who give incredible support to the African Bush Camps Foundation, people who have adopted our vision and we want to recognize those who go the extra mile to keep the heartbeat of the Foundation beating, as the song bird that spreads its news with its song through the forest, so we have come up with a monthly award, the Mantswitswidi Wa Kgwedi award, meaning Song Bird of the month in Setswana.

For the Month of December we are so thrilled to announce that we have not only one but two Song Birds of the Foundation. Smilo Mabhena from Safari Logistics, and Denzel Sofula from Somalisa Camp in Hwange National Park.

Smilo’s friendly nature and passion for working with people was the driving force of the Mambanje Fundraising Walk supported by African Bush Camps Foundation. We are honoring this vibrant lady as the second person to receive this award. Smilo Mabhena joined the African Bush Camps T/A Safari Logistics group in 2012 as the Group Travel coordinator. She was born and bred in Victoria Falls where she grew up with the “smoke that thunders” on her door step. From a very young age she took an interest in tourism which saw her working for companies like UTC and Wilderness Safaris. She has been in the Tourism & Aviation industry for 17 years. No task is ever too big or too small for her and she is always willing to help where ever she can, whilst also being a very busy business lady. Smilo feels very lucky to have been a part of the life changing event for the kids of Mambanje and she had this to say “ I felt very privileged to be afforded the chance to work with the wonderful kids of Mambanje and enjoyed seeing the joys on each of the kids’ faces as they embarked on the mighty Zambezi Cruise and the various activities which were organised by the Foundation” and also goes on to say “ given another opportunity I would not miss it for the world”.

Denzel took precious time and devoted it to travelling to Victoria Falls to help in all aspects of the Fundraising Event. He is the third person to receive the Mantswitswidi wa Kgwedi award. Denzel joined African Bush Camps on the 1st of May this year as a Host/Trainee manager and attended the Conservation talk earlier this year at Hwange Main Camp where The Foundation and Somalisa shared a stand. He has previously worked with Family Impact, Chipangali Wild life Orphanage and Orap for 5 years. He has a strong passion for community development and he will do anything to see that happen. He enjoyed the walk and quotes saying” it was the most fulfilling day of my life”

The event was a great success and the children not only did the Fundraising walk but also had many firsts in their lifetime experiences, for the first time they visited the Victoria Falls, for many of the children they went on a boat for the first time with Pamusha Cruises and saw Crocodiles at the crocodile farm. They also had a beef burger for the first time and ice-cream.

Thank you Smilo & Denzel for everything you have done for the foundation and congratulations!

Sibongile – thank you, we are grateful.
