2019 Dete Big Run: Network Building Through Sport @ Starting Point: Detema Secondary School
Mar 30 @ 6:30 am – 9:30 am

This annual event has become a highly valuable opportunity for community members in the Dete area, on the border of Zimbabwe’s Hwange National Park, to work together and collaborate in organising an event purposefully committed to healthy fun. Fully supported and funded by the Jane Bubear Sports Foundation, these events promote a powerful ethos of “community” in a remote area hard hit by drought and poverty, often resulting in a degrading of cohesive land management and cooperative community initiatives.

The theme for the 2019 event is “Network Building Through Sport”

Being located next to, and intrinsically connected, to Zimbabwe’s largest protected wildlife area, it is important for communities in the area to realise value by fostering a notion of care for the natural resources and wildlife in this particularly vulnerable ecological area. By directly linking benefits to tourism these communities learn to positively value wildlife and nature as resources for improving their well being.

World Environment Day
Jun 5 all-day

This is an annual event aimed at being the biggest, and most widely celebrated global day for positive environmental action. To commemorate the day, the Foundation works together with schools in the areas we operate in Zimbabwe, Botswana & Zambia.

The day starts with speeches about conservation and the environment, followed by either tree-planting activities or a clean-up campaign across local community centres; clinics, police stations, commercial shopping areas and along national railways & road before the schools compete for prizes with presentations in three categories: Drama/Song, Banner and Poetry.

Sports is a highly valued past time and most of the events also involve sports where both school and adult teams from the community compete. The schools set up tuck shops and cake sales of which proceeds go to the school. Refreshments will be provided, and transportation will be given to residents of the communities up to 15-kilometers away.
