In partnership with SAVE Wildlife Conservation Botswana, African Bush Camps Foundation established the Ditshiping Community Garden to improve food security in one of the Okavango Delta’s most remote villages.
Serving a community of just over 360 residents, the one-hectare, climate-smart garden provides practical agricultural skills, local employment, and a sustainable source of fresh produce.
The site has been carefully designed to support long-term sustainability and resilience. It includes a solar-powered electric fence to deter wildlife, firebreaks to reduce wildfire risk, shaded growing areas, and a water-efficient drip irrigation system.
Local youth have been employed as farm assistants and trained alongside SAVE’s agricultural team, while other residents have gained valuable skills in establishing and maintaining productive garden plots.
Following its official handover to the Ditshiping community in September 2025, the garden is now fully community-managed. The first harvest including cabbage, tomatoes, spinach, and butternut is already improving access to nutritious food while strengthening household resilience and economic opportunity.
The Ditshiping Community Garden contributes to long-term community wellbeing by:
- Increasing access to nutritious, locally grown food
- Promoting sustainable and climate-smart farming practices
- Creating opportunities for skills development and local employment
- Strengthening community collaboration and self-sufficiency
By supporting small-scale agriculture at a community level, the project helps build a more food-secure and resilient future for the Ditshiping community.
